Today’s (((SOUNDTRIP))) is from LA-Based, Singaporean artist, Corrinne May, with her song “Scars (Stronger for Life).”
Most songs that try to emphasize inspiration bank on the feisty and up-beat rhythm, talking about better times and the like. While that’s generally a great idea, you don’t always feel optimistic and fierce about moving forward. Sometimes the situation’s too shitty; like it or not, you are stuck in muck, and you need to move slowly in order to get out of it successfully.
I’m glad there’s a song like “Scars,” as it is quite rare a song. It invites and involves the listener into a process of healing, where the feeling of grace is eminent; one is not rushed to heal and is very much encouraged to bask in the glory of the present to find one’s way for betterment. (The process is always important.)
“Scars” start out with lyrics talking about despair and bleakness, loss, then shifting towards acceptance and letting go and eventually the desire to be healed and healing in itself. The momentum is slow and steady, that it’s certain without imposing, and it’s very comforting this way. You’re sure to get the message that things will get better, whatever we go through today will make us stronger for life.
Do not be surprised if “Scars” seems to have a spiritual and evangelical element to it. Corrinne May is Catholic and she has taken it upon herself to spread messages filled with hope and joy through her music.
Personally, I think it’s wonderful that she’s uplifting people through her talents and her musical passion, and I also believe that her religion or objective as an artist isn’t really an issue: even if she writes evangelically-oriented songs, she makes amazingly good songs. Her soothing deeper than your usual female voice and well thought-of words and note combinations, are more than enough to give many of the mainstream artists a run for their musicability!
Hope you enjoy this one!
Cheers! And thank God for music!
