Today’s soundtrip is Lifeline by Kjwan
It’s the very first time I’m featuring a song stamped Proudly Philippine Made here in (((SOUNDTRIP))). And it’s from one of the most talented Filipino bands ever ever… Kjwan. I will not get into band discovery here, forgive me, there’s Google for that.
I’m not really fond of music videos, I would rather hear songs and have a personal visual in my mind more than really relying on the TV. I guess this is how music is so personal to me.
However Lifeline is one of the few songs in this world where I was drawn because of the video. I saw the video first before I actually heard the song play on the radio, sometime in late 2008/early 2009 and I must say… the video was so exquisitely done. My goodness. It’s honestly the best music video I’ve ever seen from the Philippines—ok, I don’t watch too much TV, but exactly my point. I’m rarely impressed and this one got me downright to my core. It gave me shivers and a sense of wonder, like it was a music video that echoed and hit chords in my soul—again this was way back some time ago, and amazingly it still has this effect to this day.
The music is very distinct Filipino alternative rock melody chemistry of sound. And what I love about it most is that it grows…more of, flourishes, on you.
Eventually I started searching for the lyrics and analyzing it, and thuslearned that it has a very nice and simple yet needed and urgent message sung out: HOPE.
According to Jorel Corpuz, Kjwan’s guitarist, his response to all the queries made by people about the meaning of Lifeline:
“1. it talks about learning how to let go of things and how you can always be hopeful that things are always gonna be better even if the situation looks otherwise.
2. when i wrote the lyrics to the chorus i meant it because no matter what happens we will always be made with the same life force as God made us. and thus speaks a truth that you will always be meant for GREAT THINGS and AWESOMENESS you dig? which is why sometimes you should just let go and let things ride. on their own.”
I kind of put this song on a hiatus on my playlist, but recently I got back to it. I currently have it on repeat 1.
As I listen to this song over and over again today, I’m thinking that it’s really a song meant for me, at this very moment. Perhaps this is the greastest reason now why I’m featuring this in my (((SOUNDTRIP))).
Yes, it has an awesome-mind blowing philosophical music video, so well done. Yes, the music fits my taste and preference. Yes, the lyrics are thought-inducing and inspiring. And yes, it’s a very definite answer to my prayers; like a very soothing embrace and affirmation to my hurting and slowly healing heart.
See! Music is not just creative expression. It’s also inspiration.
This is why I thank God for music. Cheers!
